                                             Chapter 3

Elle awoke amongst violet sheets made from fine silk. She thought she might have still
been in a dream world of hers because of the silk's luxurious feel under her cheek and
hands. Her mind finally broke the cloudy mist of sleep and her heart sunk. Elle was not
in her room – this one was much, much larger and much more elegant. The only light source
came from two dim oil lamps and the moon peaking through the curtains.

Elle sat up and realized that she had been sleeping in her costume from the party. Her
waist ached from the constraining bodice. Elle strained her eyes against the darkness of
the room in search of a wardrobe. It was a futile attempt – the only thing she could make
out was her mask sitting on the nightstand beside the bed. Instead, Elle slid off the
side of the bed, but instantly jumped back on. The stone floor beneath her feet was cold
as ice. Holding her breath, she cautiously placed her feet on the ground and had to grit
her teeth with every step she took.

She grabbed the edges of the curtains and flung them to the side. Through the newly
revealed window that took up the entire wall of the room, Elle's eyes were greeted with a
breathtaking view. Opening one of the giant windows and walking out onto the balcony,
Elle gaped.

The black night sky, clean of any light pollution, was filled to the brim with clusters
of stars – trillions of them. The full moon was a bright silver sphere in the sky,
illuminating the landscape below. Elle frowned a little when she couldn't spot any
familiar constellations or celestial bodies, but figured there were just too many stars
to spot any one in particular.

Elle turned her attention to the visible grounds surrounding the house she was in. The
balcony was wide enough to provide a view of a rather pleasant-looking garden; even from
this distance, she could smell fragrant roses and jasmine wafting through the air.

Further off in the distance Elle spotted what appeared to be a stable. She thought for a
moment that this might be a wealthy farmland with a fancy farmhouse... That is until Elle
reminded herself of the Gothic architecture and stone floors of the room behind her.

Elle leaned her head out far to view the house's exterior. What she was met with was less
of a house and more of a small castle. Because of the moonlight, Elle could not see
exactly what color the exterior stone walls were, but she could see the extravagant
carved details in the stone windowsills of various windows. Even the stone railing of the
balcony had beautiful carvings engraved into the rough surface.

Elle studied the landscape once again. There was what appeared to be a forest encircling
the large clearing in which the manor sat – and a thick one at that. She could not make
out any tree trunks, only treetops. Whether or not it was because of the darkness, the
forest looked ominous.

Elle could not tell exactly what time it was. She walked back into the room and shut the
window. She proceeded to look for a clock somewhere in the room, but found nothing. There
were two doors in the room, and Elle opened the one nearest the bed: a bathroom with no
sign of a clock, or a toilet for that matter. She tried the other one. The knob stuck a little,
but unlatched after a little jiggle.

She stepped out into the hallway. Directly in front of her was more carved stone railing.
The rug beneath her feet was a rich crimson colored carpet that appeared to cover all of the
stone walkways. Elle took a few steps forward to see the room below. It was a
high-ceiling sitting room containing a huge fireplace. In front of it was a loveseat
with a chair to its left and right.

Sprawled on the loveseat was a figure in dark clothing. Through the dim light of the
embers, Elle focused in on the figure, identifying Mias's face. He had an ancient looking
book hanging loosely from his fingers. Elle watched as the book finally slid out of his
grip and onto the floor. 'He must be fast asleep,' Elle thought.

Elle took careful steps down the stairs, although the large, echoing room did not make it
easy. Having looked around for a clock on her way toward the sitting room and finding
none, Elle approached where Mias lay. Gingerly placing her hand on the back of the
velvety loveseat, Elle looked down at Mias's sleeping features.

He still wore the black eye makeup from the party. Through it, she could see bags under
his eyes; even while asleep he appeared exhausted. She would have to be content to ask
Mias to take her home first thing in the morning. Just as Elle decided that she would
continue her quest for a clock, she took a second look at Mias's eye makeup – or lack of
it. Upon closer inspection, Elle realized that what she thought had been makeup was
Mias's actual skin. 'Maybe it's a tattoo?' Elle wondered to herself. She looked for any
sign indicating whether the black pigment was inked or not.

"It is quite rude to stare at someone while they are asleep," Mias muttered, eyes still
closed. Elle nearly fell back from surprise.

Mias opened one eye and, upon seeing her reaction, smiled. Mias sat up, stretched, and
cracked his neck. Elle gulped; it suddenly crashed upon her that she was alone with a man
that she hadn't planned on being serious with. She felt the blush creep into her cheeks.

A low rumble of Mias's laugh echoed softly in the ceiling. "What are you doing up
anyway?" Mias asked, a devilish grin spread onto his face, "Come to wake me up to make
love to me? Surely you realize we only just met, Elle. Tch, tch, tch... However, I will
accept because you asked so sweetly."

Elle, taken aback, raised an eyebrow, "I did not ask you anything, especially having to
do with that." She spat the word as if it were poisonous. Mias stood and walked around
the loveseat.

"Come on, Elle," He growled playfully, taking her hand. She ripped it away from his grip,
glaring at Mias. She sighed in frustration and turned to walk off. Elle was stopped after
making only a few steps toward the flight of stairs. Mias's arms surrounded her, pinning
her arms to her sides.

His lips brushed against her ear, hot breath caressing her cheek as he whispered, "I
remember the way you kissed me; I felt the way you held on to me, the way you reacted to
me... I know you want it as much as I, my love." Elle struggled against his hold, but
stopped as she recalled blacking out while kissing Mias.

"You drugged me..." Elle mumbled, feeling a painful lump in her throat and fear bubbling
in her gut.

          "Excuse me?"

"You! You drugged me!" Elle yelled, her voice raising an octave. She continued to
struggle twice as hard, thrashing violently in every direction in an attempt to break
Mias's grip.

"I'm... afraid I don't... know what you're... talking about!" Mias replied with
difficulty, trying to hold Elle still.

"You've got to be kidding me! Let... me... GO!" Elle screamed. Mias growled menacingly
this time. Elle's stomach dropped as her feet left the floor. She felt Mias's arms slide
away, but her arms still felt like they were frozen in place. Elle looked down, only to
see that the floor was several feet below her, with no sign of anyone holding her up. Her
hair floated around her face, like zero gravity had taken over her body. She yelped in
shock. How was this possible?

"Mias! Let me down right now, you f—" Elle felt her mouth shaping the words, but her
voice cut out. Her eyes went wide. She tried to demand an explanation, but it was no use.

Mias closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. He sighed, "Now, love, I used a
considerable amount of energy getting you here. I need proper rest now, and if I allow
you to continue kicking and screaming, I will get none." His expression was serious, but
his eyes softened after only a few seconds. Mias took Elle's chin, "Good night, my dear
Elle."

Watching him lean in to kiss her, Elle could only mouth, 'Mias! ... No! ... Don't you
dare!' He took her mouth and kissed her with a gentle, but firm force; but force
nonetheless. Elle could only do one thing. When Mias parted his lips, Elle bit down hard
on his lower lip.

Mias jerked away, slapping a hand over his mouth. She tasted a metallic flavor on her
lips and spat it out. Mias's eyes were wide with shock, but they quickly turned furious
as they slid up to lock with hers. Elle felt a pang of dread upon seeing that spark of
anger. Mias lowered his hand, scowling. The dread settled heavily in the pit of Elle's
stomach. Mias's hand was already covered in blood, and more flowed from the open wound on
his already swollen lip. It was more grotesque than Elle had expected or even planned for
it to be. Her body broke out into involuntary shudders of fear and anxiety.

"That's how you want to play? Fine." Mias hissed, filling the silence as blood dripped
down his chin and onto the floor. He turned on his heel and stormed away up the stairs,
the very walls of the manor rumbling and rattling by an unseen force. A door slammed
seconds later, causing the walls to rattle once more before Elle unexpectedly crashed to
the hard stone floor.

"Ahh..." She groaned. The impact made her head pound painfully. Her vision blurred as
tears welled up in her eyes. She did not know if she was crying because of the pain, the
fear, or the confusion. Maybe it was even her frustration. Which ever it was, Elle
allowed herself to sob in the middle of the sitting room.

Once the pain ebbed away and she finally found the strength to stand, she made her way
slowly to the second floor. Her dress weighed her down in this weakened state. She
dragged her feet up step after step. She found the door that she had exited earlier.
Still in her uncomfortable dress, Elle curled up in the queen-sized bed. Just when she
thought that she wouldn't be able to fall asleep, she felt the gentle tug of exhaustion
take her under.
