                                             Chapter 13

Elle felt dread drip in the pit of her stomach. How did Tovi know? If he knew,
did that mean the other brothers knew? "H-how—?"

"A little trick that Mias taught me. It's a very well done charm, but I think
Mias rushed it a bit. I'm fairly sure I can fix it." Tovi said, scratching his chin.

"How could you tell? What if the others—"

"Shh... Keep your voice low. It's hard to explain. You know how sometimes you see
things in your peripheral that isn't really there? Well, it's kind of the opposite – when
it comes to charms or spells meant to cloak things, it has to be done very well. If it
isn't quite right, your peripherals can reveal what's being hidden. For you, it was tough
to spot at first, but then it was like a glimmer of your true appearance appeared
briefly. Believe it or not, the trick is not widely known. I doubt that the others even
have suspicions about you."

"Then... I assume you're the only brother that Mias doesn't despise?"

"Never assume anything in this world – it makes you vulnerable. But, yes, that
happens to be true. We can't stand any of our brothers except for each other." Tovi said,
sitting down next to Elle. "So, what do you think of Mias?"

"Well, I'm definitely not as fond of him as you are." Elle replied, still not
used to her disguised voice.
"Why is that? He's told me so much about you."

"Has he? Well, for starters he kidnapped me and brought me to this world. After
that, it was just constant harassment and teasing. I just don't completely trust him."

"And yet you trusted him enough to accompany him here. Why?"

"I – I just... Didn't want to be by myself again." Elle looked away, unhappy that
she had just admitted it.

"I suppose that was partially my fault... He had originally left to meet me in
the village nearest the manor – to train me – but..."

          "But what?"

"Just... something that you shouldn't know about. I swear to you, when Mias
brought you to Ævøld he wasn't expecting to expose you to potential danger."

"Tovi, why are you telling me this?" Elle asked curiously, realizing that Tovi
wasn't purposely trying to hide things from her or lie.

"Because Mias isn't as bad as you think he is." Tovi answered sheepishly, "He
just... deserves someone like you. He hasn't tried to fuck around with you yet, has he?"

"Tovi!" Elle exclaimed at hearing the word come out of such a young person's
mouth. A genuine laugh escaped Tovi, such an innocent sound in contrast to his foul
language. "I don't want to hear another word like that from you!" Elle whispered
desperately.

"Alright, alright! But honestly, he hasn't tried... doing anything with you?"

"N-no," Elle blushed. How did this kid know this much at such a young age? He had
to have been eight or nine at least.

          "Well, there you go!"

"Tovi," Elle took a good look at the boy, "what is it you're trying to do
exactly?" When he didn't answer right away, Elle poked him.

"AUGH!" He squirmed away from her, "I just..." He looked her in the eyes with a
please-don't-get-mad look, "I just want to see Mias happy... And the last time I saw him,
he wouldn't shut up about you – even when he was ranting about how you kick and scream
every step of the way. You're the only woman he's ever actually talked about."

Elle was sure she felt a vein popping out of her neck. 'Out of how many?' she
wanted to ask, just as she had asked Thane.

"That came out badly," Tovi said after a moment of silence. Elle smiled wearily.
"Please, just give him a chance..." Tovi knelt in front of Elle with pleading eyes.

"Mias didn't put you up to this?" Elle asked skeptically. Tovi shook his head.
She sighed, feeling her fears bubbling within.

"Please, Elle. You're the only chance he has!" Tovi looked as if he were about to cry.

          "What do you mean?"

"Our father... He is planning on naming Mias his heir."

          "Today?" Elle asked, shocked.

"No. He cannot yet since Mias is still exiled. But father has a plan to arrange a
marriage between Mias and the daughter of the most powerful family in our neighboring
continent. Not only would that bring Mias back from exile, but also the Decivus family
would be twice as powerful. Elle, think about it: our father naming Mias the heir to the
Decivus estate, fortune, and power; our father choosing him over Durias, Arias, Orias,
Brutias, and Rothvias. With all of that on the line, they will be poised to kill Mias on
the spot for a chance at the title. In turn, they will kill each other in a blood bath.
Then they will ensure that any surviving sons – myself, for example – are killed. It's
just what father wants. But if something were to keep Mias from being able to marry the
other family's daughter, then he will remain in exile."

Elle let his words sink in, "So... I have to keep Mias from being able to marry?"
Tovi nodded shyly. "But, why does your father want to name Mias the heir?"

"Because in his eyes, Mias is the ideal son. Strong, cunning, intelligent...
Everything he wants in an heir. However, in the end, all he wants is to see his own sons
kill each other, or – his true hope – to see Mias kill every last one by his own hand;
just as father did to his own brothers. It is the curse of the Decivus."

"Mias wouldn't," Elle said in disbelief.

"Mias doesn't even know father's intentions."

"Then how do you know?" Elle asked.

A smile spread across Tovi's face again, "Another trick Mias taught me. I can
eavesdrop on my own father without his knowledge. Therein lies father's mistake:
unknowingly sending me off to train with a teacher he does not know, expecting me to
learn nothing of importance. Therefore, I am no concern to him. He does not know that
Mias is training me." He winked and Elle couldn't help smiling.

Tovi's head shot up, looking over Elle's shoulder. Elle heard a whistling noise
and before she knew it, Tovi jumped in front of her and threw his arms up in front of his
face. A green force field was speeding toward them before it crashed against an unseen
shield that Tovi conjured. The force of the collision pushed Tovi back several feet,
strong enough to cause Tovi's steady feet to dig nearly twenty centimeters into the
ground along the way. The green force dissipated as Tovi spread his arms out, smirking at
his victory.

Elle looked around wildly and saw Mias walking toward them. He had a grin on his
face as he approached. He mussed up Tovi's hair affectionately, "Well done, brother. What
did you think, Elliot?"

"Oh, you know you can drop it. I know it's her already," Tovi said, swatting
Mias's hand away and jabbing him in the ribs.

"Do you? Was it too obvious?"

"What, you meant to leave it like that?" Tovi asked incredulously.

"Yes. I wanted you to meet her for yourself." Mias crossed his arms casually,
glancing at Elle. "So?" He asked expectantly.

"Oh, Mias, she's just as perfect, and wonderful, and fantastic as you said she
would be!" Tovi said sarcastically, feigning a swoon. Mias shoved him lightly, rolling
his eyes. "She's also a 'he' at the moment, so I suppose I haven't gotten to properly
meet her face to face."

"Maybe another time, then," Elle chimed in, smiling.

Tovi nodded happily, but then turned to Mias, looking much more serious, "Has
father already spoken?"

"Yes, a bloody waste of time if you ask me. All he wanted to announce was that he
found a way to end my exile... Although, if I could end it, then that would give me
another chance to take him down." Mias said thoughtfully.

Tovi exchanged a glance with Elle, as if reminding her of their earlier
conversation. Elle took a deep breath. This was not her will, to save Mias from a
gruesome fate – no matter if he won or lost; but it had suddenly become her job.

"Well," Tovi clapped, trying to change the conversation, "Where will Elliot be
sleeping tonight?"

"Not with the servants like Durias insisted. I told them that Elliot may be my
servant, but he is the guest that I brought and would be treated as a guest. So you,"
Mias turned to Elle, "will have a room to yourself, next to mine. Dinner will be served
much later, but until then I can take you to the library,"

          "S-sure," Elle replied.

The three of them spent hours in the library, the two boys hunting down books to
show Elle – mostly ones containing fairy tales from this world. They were mostly dark
stories, reminding Elle of the stories by the Grimm Brothers. Soon, they had to leave and
sit in the dining hall for a rather silent dinner. Elle felt her stomach flitter
nervously as she saw the five other brothers again. At the head of the table was a new
face, aged but recognizable. Gray streaks wove throughout his long hair, and his face was
completely unreadable. It was he – the one who invented the scheme Tovi had informed her
of. It was the Master of the estate – the Father of the Decivus brothers.

A smile curled on his lips as he set eyes on them.

You know it's getting good when the writer can pop these things out like crazy! XD

:iconmormonbookworm: asked me a how old Tovi was in the comments of the last chapter. I decided to put these little tidbits of information here for you all.
In this particular story of mine, Elle is 19. Jenny has mentioned that Mias is about 7 years older than Elle (unless she has changed that recently) which makes Mias 26. Tovi is 10. These are not any of their official ages... Also, I'm not planning to figure out ages for the other ones (Except Elias, because his is easy to figure out!)... XD

I personally don't have much to comment on for this chapter, but I'm sure you all do!
